high School Program Overview
HEaT High School offers a social studies enrichment class, that is equivalent to one high school credit hour. Our class sizes are set at 18. Below is a sample course offering and outline.
Course Description- You probably don’t think much about what you eat at each meal. Many of us take for granted the people, events, ingredients, processes, technology and trends that affect our food culture. This course allows us to explore the wide world of food history through a few engaging topics. Each class will be broken into activities such as a historical lesson, a “lab” that has us expand our food experiences, a task to expand our understanding of food culture, and an occasional field trip or guest speaker to help enrich our learning.
Semester Project- In this project, students will work in pairs or small groups to reimagine what a “meal” could look like in the future—socially, culturally, or environmentally. Drawing on ideas from the course (cultural foodways, scarcity, technology, tradition, sustainability), they’ll invent a completely new dining experience, food system, or edible concept and present it as a creative prototype - This is part research, part imagination, and part social commentary
Lunch - Students will need to bring a nut-free lunch each week, along with a water bottle. There will be a 30 minute lunch break for students to eat and socialize.
Technology - Students may bring a non-phone device from home to use each week. All students must adhere to the technology agreement presented and signed on the first day of class.
